When my grandmother was a young child she was a German living in Poland with her mother and three brothers. He father had to work for the government since he was a chemist or something of the sorts. My great grandmother didn't even know if he was still alive. Fleeing from Hitler my great grandmother took my grandmother and her two brothers and they decided to flee the country by train.

As the train started to roll down the tracks she said that she felt something was wrong and so she jumped off the train and had passengers hand her three kids out the windows to her as the train was heading towards it's location.

Unfortunate for the people still on the train somebody had bombed a bridge and the train de-railed killing most of the passengers. I really wish I knew the name of this disaster so as to read more about what happened. I only know this from my grandmother telling stories about surviving World War II.

So, glad to know I'm not the only person who is into disasters and tragedies ... a little alarmed to find I'm only one of three, but that's just so far, right?

-- Andes Soccer Players Plane Crash

I started this because I couldn't find a community which discusses in depth major and minor disasters, tragedies, diseases and unsolved mysteries from history. I love doing research in these areas, and lately I have had the time to find out even more. So I will be posting interesting facts, websites, exerpts from book, pictures, etc. on these subjects.

To all who join, I urge you to do the same, and to discuss whatever you feel would fit in here. I especially hope that anyone with personal experiences, or links to survivors of these events (like the relatives or close friends of) will feel welcome to share what they went through here.

My goal in this is to learn as much as I can.
